Any church may list its openings(s); it is unlikely, however, that churches whose compensation is markedly substandard will find suitable candidates for their consideration.

In order to begin employment with a mutual understanding of responsibilities and privileges, and also to protect the rights and interests of both church and musician, the Lincoln AGO Chapter strongly recommends the establishment of a letter of agreement or contract.

A Sample contract (prepared by the AGO National Office) is reproduced in this manual. A contract between a church and its musician(s) might well cover any and all of the following:

• annual review; cost-of-living and merit increases in salary
• the right to serve as organist for all weddings and funerals within the church
• grievance procedures
• vacation with full pay (3-4 weeks, depending on length of tenure)
• sick leave with pay (2 weeks)
• health and life insurance
• Social Security
• pension plan, or contribution toward an annuity
• continuing education time and allowance
• proper maintenance of church musical instruments
• adequate rehearsal room, office and work space
• use of church instrument(s) for private teaching by church musician
